If you are looking for a durable, attractive and low-maintenance surface for your driveway, patio or path, you might have come across the terms resin bound and resin bonded.
But what do they mean, and what are the differences between them? In this blog post, we will explain the main features, benefits and drawbacks of each system, and help you decide which one is best for your project.
What is Resin Bound?
Resin bound is a system of laying a mixture of resin and aggregates (such as gravel, stone or glass) onto a base layer of concrete or tarmac. The resin binds the aggregates together, creating a smooth, seamless and permeable surface. This means that water can drain through the surface, preventing puddles and flooding. Resin bound surfaces are also resistant to weeds, frost, UV rays and oil spills. They are available in a wide range of colours and textures, allowing you to create a bespoke design that suits your taste and property.
What is Resin Bonded?
Resin bonded is a system of applying a layer of resin onto a base layer of concrete or tarmac and then scattering loose aggregates on top. The aggregates stick to the resin, but some remain loose, giving the appearance of natural gravel. Resin bonded surfaces are non-permeable, meaning that water cannot drain through them. They also have a rougher texture than resin bound surfaces, providing more grip and traction. Resin bonded surfaces are ideal for areas that require high skid resistance, such as ramps, roads and car parks.
What are the Pros and Cons of Each System?
Both resin bound and resin bonded systems have their advantages and disadvantages, depending on your needs and preferences. Here are some of the main factors to consider when choosing between them:
- Appearance: Resin bound surfaces have a smoother, glossier and more modern look than resin bonded surfaces, which have a rougher, more traditional look. Resin bound surfaces also offer more design flexibility, as you can choose from various colours, patterns and shapes.
Resin bonded surfaces are more limited in terms of aesthetics, as they depend on the colour and size of the aggregates used. - Durability: Both systems are durable and long-lasting, but resin bound surfaces have an edge over resin bonded surfaces in terms of resistance to weathering and wear and tear. Resin bound surfaces do not crack or fade over time, whereas resin bonded surfaces may lose some aggregates or develop bald patches due to traffic or erosion. Resin bound surfaces also require less maintenance than resin bonded surfaces, as they do not need regular sweeping or topping up.
- Permeability: Resin bound surfaces are permeable, meaning that water can drain through them into the ground below. This makes them environmentally friendly and compliant with SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) regulations.
Resin bonded surfaces are non-permeable, meaning that water cannot drain through them. This can cause problems with drainage and flooding, especially if there is no adequate slope or drainage system in place. - Cost: The cost of both systems depends on various factors, such as the size and shape of the area to be covered, the type and quality of the materials used, and the labour involved. Generally speaking, resin bound surfaces tend to be more expensive than resin bonded surfaces upfront, but they may save you money in the long run due to their lower maintenance costs and longer lifespan.
Which System Should You Choose?
The choice between resin bound and resin bonded surfaces ultimately depends on your personal preferences, budget and project requirements.
Both systems have their pros and cons, so you need to weigh them carefully before making a decision.
